Membership

We’re delighted to accept new members singing any voice, of any age and from any background. There’s no audition to go through, and you’re welcome to try out a rehearsal before committing yourself.

  • Practise and perform with a friendly, enthusiastic and diverse group
  • Develop your sight-reading ability
  • Learn to sing with greater confidence and artistry
  • Join in European tours and Islington events, concert trips, parties
  • or just the Tuesday night ‘pint after’

Subscriptions

Membership fees are £100 per annum (or £60 concessionary rate for students, unwaged, senior citizens) if you sign up for a full year in the autumn term. You’re welcome to pay  membership fees termly at £45 per term (concessions £25). Our year starts in September and covers three ‘terms’ rehearsing for the Christmas, Easter and Summer concerts. Please note that these subscription rates, substantially lower than for many comparable choirs, are underpinned by the policy on ticket sales by members (see next paragraph).

Ticket Sales
Sales of concert tickets are vitally important to pay for the orchestra, soloists, publicity, equipment and the concert venue. Members are therefore required to take and pay for at least four tickets for each concert. As an aside, our membership fees are relatively low compared to other local choirs in London and that’s because requiring members who perform in concerts to buy tickets balances that out.

It is hoped members will sell all their tickets to ensure we have reasonable audience numbers. You should be aware, though, that if you don’t sell any tickets you will have a financial commitment of an additional £20 or more per concert in addition to the subscriptions.

Musical Scores
Vocal scores are provided to members free of charge, whenever possible. If you wish to buy your own copy, the librarians can often provide music at a discount. You may, however, be asked to provide your own copy of Carols for Choirs Book 1 for Christmas concerts (approximate cost £10-£12).

Concert Dress
Formal dress is required for all concerts: Men – white shirt, black bow tie, black jacket and trousers or evening dress, black shoes; Ladies – black long-sleeved top, long black skirt or long black trousers, black shoes.

Hi, I am keen to join the choir, I have had beginners singing classes.
Do you break for the summer or sing right through.
    Thank you
    Vanessa

For several years I have attended app. half the Tuesday evening sessions of the Islington Summer Singers at Christchurch in Highbury. There seems to be no formalised system for publicising these sessions and so I usually just turn up on a Tuesday in July and hope for the best. Does anyone know if it is happening again this year (2010) and if there is a schedule?

    Regards
    Geoff

    Hi there,

I’ve just moved to the area and am looking to join a choir – I sang in my uni’s acapella group but thought trying something different like choral music could be interesting!

I just wanted to check if I could still turn up to a rehearsal, or if I should wait until after the Summer Concert.

    Thanks,

    Mike

Hi Mike, sorry for the slow reply. You were right to think about joining us in the Autumn session. More details on dates and location here. Or there’s always the Summer Singers which is no-commitment and great fun. cheers, Richard

        Hi Richard,

I’ll try to make the first Summer Singers practice in that case.

        Thanks for the advice,

        Mike

    Hi Emily
did you get along to a rehearsal?
did you find the dates on the website?
We’re onto the fourth rehearsal now, so it might be a bit late to join – but hopefully you’re already signed up.

    yours
    Richard

I am quite intrested in joining and was wondering if I could come and see what you do? I dont really have a choral background would that be a problem? Thanks Maria

Hi Maria, thanks for commenting. Firstly, it’s no problem at all that you have no choral experience – and secondly that we start rehearsals in a couple of weeks and you’re more than welcome to come along for a week or two to try it out.
Hope to see you soon, Richard (committee)

Dear Madeleine – we’d be delighted for you to try us out and join us if you like it. We welcome new members any time. Just come to any Tuesday evening rehearsal and let us know you’re new so we can give you a copy of the music and some info. Suggest you might start in the new year on 12 January when we will be starting rehearsals for theSpring concert (details in the post just above). Hope to see you there!

      John

Dear Amalia – it’s great that you are interested in joining, you will be most welcome. We start rehearsals on Tuesday 12 January, and we will be singing Bruckner’s Mass in E Minor along with Gabrieli In Ecclesiis and Rutter’s Gloria. Look forward to seeing you then – check out the ‘Rehearsals’ tab for details of where and when etc. By the way do please come to our concert next Saturday if you can – Mendelssohn’s Elijah: it looks like being a great concert. Details all over the site!

I should like to join your choir, but am not sure what time the refhearsals are on Tuesday evenings? Also wondered what you are singing this term?

    Many thanks

Hi Joy, thanks for the enquiry.
Rehearsals are at 7.30pm on Tuesdays. You can find more details and a map here.
This term we’re singing Mendelssohn’s Elijah – which, after the first couple of rehearsals, sounds great.
      Hope to see you there,
      thanks
      Richard from the committee.
